If you want to take things to the next level, and really immerse yourself in the night sky, the right app can help. Here are the best apps to help you get started If you’re looking to build your own DIY telescope, be sure to check out our guide to building a cheap telescope.

Night Sky, this is one of the most popular apps for stargazing, and for good reason. Night Sky has an excellent interface, which allows you to find objects in the sky by their name, constellation, or by simply searching for them. Once you’ve found what you’re looking for, the app will show you where it is in the sky, along with all of its key details, such as its magnitude, distance from Earth, and more. It also shows a chart of the object’s movement across the sky throughout the night. As well as being great for stargazing, Night Sky can also be used to help you spot comets and shooting stars, so if you’re out on a camping trip and want to try and spot one of these rare events, then this is a great app to have with you. SkyView lite one of the biggest problems with stargazing is that it’s hard to get your bearings when you’re looking at the night sky. When you’re using binoculars or a telescope, it can be even harder because you have to keep adjusting your position to make sure that you’re not looking at the sky upside down. However, with SkyView lite, all of this is taken care of for you. The app allows you to use your phone or tablet as a window into space and allows you to view things from different angles. You can even adjust your point of view to show exactly what the night sky would look like from different locations on Earth. There are also many fun extra elements that come with this app, including a tour of the solar system and a journey through the universe. As well as showing what objects look like in real life, the re are also 3D models of them which can be rotated using your fingers. This makes it much easier to see how they look when they’re not just a dot in the sky.

Star Chart:  For something a little different, try Star Chart. This app isn’t just about finding objects in the night sky; it also allows you to explore them in much more detail. You can find out everything about a planet or star that you’re looking at – including its temperature, composition, size, and even what it would look like if it was in front of your eyes. The app will even tell you if there are any meteor showers coming up that you might want to watch out for. There are lots of interesting facts included with each object too – so if you want to know more about planets or stars, then this is a great place to start.
