Britain ‘s Royal Mint is creating an NFT ready for launch this summer -The announcement comes after Theresa May was forced to backtrack on plans to make NFTs a legal tender in the UK, saying that they were not yet ready for that purpose. NFTs are digital tokens that can be traded on the Ethereum blockchain and can be used to buy goods and services on the blockchain. The Royal Mint first announced that they have been developing NFTs in early-2018. The announcement was made on March 19, 2019, during The Royal Mint’s LBMA Investor Seminar hosted at the Bank of England in London. It was attended by those who hold bullion but also all market participants from central banks and global custodians to distributors and hedge funds who trade gold. A second seminar will be held in New York sometime later for American counterparts.

The NFT is a new digital currency that will be used in the UK to pay taxes, shop, and make payments. The Royal Mint has also announced that it will launch a new digital currency called the Sterling Digital Currency (SDC) in the UK to launch this summer.  The cryptocurrency market has had a strong bull run this year and the second quarter of 2019 saw an increase in the number of NFT tokens being created by projects in the crypto space. Currently, there are around 60 NFTs in the market that are used to represent digital assets such as coins, loyalty points, property, cars, and other digital assets.
